I'm sure it's not just me who has gone a little crazy ordering online in lockdown, telling myself it's okay because 'I would have spent this going out if things were open though?!'. Think I may have used that excuse a few too many times now. I've tried my best to make sure all my purchases were as eco-friendly as possible. Luckily for me, I've been able to find some great small uk businesses and second hand bargains that are great for me and the planet. Have a read to find out what they were!

North Valley Candles - Handmade Wax Melts

North Valley Candles

I promised North Valley Candles a honest review of their vegan and cruelty free wax melts. They sell a whole range of beautiful candles, their speciality being luxury pyramid candles with hidden gemstones inside.

They aim to be as eco-friendly as possible, so in terms of packaging any plastic used is recycled from their own previous orders and they use natural string and unbleached paper to get them to your door.

The Arrival

On the way was a mixed 3 pack of North Valley Candles wax melt snap bars and I was really excited to see what they were like. The pack is made up of three flavours: Evening Honeysuckle, Calming Lavender & Sensual Jasmine. Each is made up of natural, non-chemically dyed mica, soy wax, vegan and cruelty free fragrance oil and dyes that are sourced from another family run small business.

They arrived in just 2 days and I could smell them before I even opened the pack! Every colour was so pretty and each bar was finished off with gold dusting. Overall first impressions: pups and I approve.

I grabbed my wax melt and got down to it, the bar works like a chocolate bar and you snap off how much you want to use. Personally, I think this a great way to do it, I have always used Yankee candle melts and they come as a circle that you pop on top but you don't get any choice on how much you put on. With these bars you can put a little piece on and then add more if you need/want to later. However, I found that the piece I put on lasted for ages and there was no need to add anymore. Now if you want to change flavours later you save a lot of waste as you've only used a small section.

Most importantly, they smell amazing and I found that even after I blew the candle out, the aroma hung around for a long time. Even having the bars out on the table made my room smell so nice. Each scent compliments the other as well so you could easily mix the bars together to make you own scent, which I will be trying out soon.

Overall, I got a very good first impression of North Valley Candles. I think that they would make lovely gifts for friends and family especially around christmas time when everyone needs warming up a little. The price for this mixed set is £10 or £3.99 for an individual bar with free delivery in the UK. For one Yankee candle wax melt they are around £1.70 which is a little cheaper and they are also cruelty free and vegan which is good to know. However, due to the points I made before I do think one bar will last a lot longer than the Yankee Candle alternative so price wise they are about on par.

Supporting small businesses like this one in times like these is so important, especially those that have the planet in mind! To find North Valley Candles online you can check out:

Other lockdown buys...

I've become a bit of a depop addict over the course of lockdown hauling in some second hand bargains. Reusing is one of the best ways to stop fast fashion in it's tracks and help out our planet and depop is a easy and safe place to do it!

My first purchase was an UO Pins and Needles cardigan I found for £15, it was in fab condition and it's literally the cutest thing I have ever owned. One women's trash is another women's gold! The second bargain came in the form of a raincoat from Tretorn. Last year it rained so much in York and I've never been able to find a raincoat that is cute and actually protective. Found this beauty for £30 RRP £85 in perfect condition and it's made out of recycled plastic, happy days!

Recent set up Saz&Mol are selling handmade scrunchies and headbands.10% of every purchase will go to Dogs Trust, which is so sweet! I'm a sucker for a headband so I treated myself to 2 for £10 and I am in love. They came in this cute little packaging through my letterbox with a lovely note inside.

Free delivery to the local area (based in Swainby) or £1.50 delivery. You can check them out on:

I hope that you have enjoyed reading this post and might have found a new favourite when it comes to small businesses. I might even be starting a little project of my own as I am being treated to a sewing machine for my birthday next week!

I also just want to say a huge thank you for all the love and support on my latest post, I wasn't even sure whether to post it about my experience with menstrual cups so it means a lot that so many people read it! Sending lots of love to everyone who visits the site and enjoys it <3

As always, thanks for reading!

Antonia :)
